Having switched back to my Nexus One, a few days ago, I was playing around a little with the Layar application, which does not work on my iPhone 3G. What the application does is nothing more than providing a platform for Augmented Reality layers … What does that mean? Well, people can create virtual, location based layers above the reality, seen through the mobiles camera lens.
Does that make it clear? If not check out their website for more information:
Searching for new layers I bumbed into one, which directly caught my attention: “Exile on your street”. As most of you can probably imagine, it’s about the Rolling Stones and about promotion. Since I’m quite a big fan of the Stones, I installed the layer to see what it is about.
Actually, the application, or I’l better say the layer itself, is not such a big deal. All it does is letting you post virtual posters of the Rolling Stones in your environment and add 30 seconds of music. You can post them whereever you want. People walking the streets, having the same layer on their mobile device, can afterwards see these posters and listen to the music. OK, I agree, there’s not many freakies today walking the streets, looking through their mobile phone’s camera, searching for virtual posters – at least not in Barcelona – but everyday they are getting more and more and maybe one day …
Right now it’s just a great campaign, a nice game for freakies, but it’s also a small step into the future. It is probably the first campaign of this type for a rock band and in my opinion a really great idea. And it made it the layer of the week!
Anyway, I haven’t found any posters in Barcelona yet, but I will go on searching and, hey, I already posted one! So start searching for it!
